Sergey Kovalev Names The Better Fighter Between Andre Ward And Canelo After Facing Both: “100%”

Former light-heavyweight star Sergey Kovalev has revealed who he believes is a better fighter between past rivals Andre Ward and Canelo Alvarez.

Known for his thunderous punching power, Kovalev cemented himself as one of the best light-heavyweights of his era, racking up victories over the likes of Jean Pascal, Anthony Yarde and Bernard Hopkins throughout his career.

He became a light-heavyweight world champion on multiple occasions during his tenure, reigning as the unified WBA, WBO and IBF champion for two years between 2014 and 2016 before he was dethroned by Andre Ward.

Kovalev re-captured the WBO world title in 2019 but was later defeated by Mexican star Canelo, suffering an 11th round stoppage when they clashed at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas in November of 2019.

In an interview with Fight Hub TV, Kovalev made no mistake in revealing Canelo to be a better fighter than Ward, as he claims the Mexican great has ‘everything’.

“100% [Canelo is a better fighter than Andre Ward]. Maybe Ward was better at super-middleweight but not at light heavyweight. Canelo fights everybody, he has stamina, good legs, speed, IQ, everything. I respect him.”

Canelo entered the paid ranks as a 15-year-old back in 2005 and has proved himself to be one of the greatest fighters of his era during this time. The 35-year-old from Guadalajara has captured world titles in four weight classes, as well as the undisputed super-middleweight championship on two occasions.

Whilst he has suffered several losses during his tenure, the Mexican superstar has racked up a number of legacy-defining victories over the years, defeating the likes of Erislandy Lara, Miguel Cotto and Gennady Golovkin.
