The controversy from Gervonta Davis and Lamont Roach Jr’s draw continues to unfold.
‘Tank’ kept hold of his WBA Lightweight World Title after twelve close rounds, with one judge scoring it 115-113 in his favour but the other two unable to split the fighters and calling it 114-114.
That majority draw verdict is particularly contentious because the champion took a knee in the ninth round. Had it been called a knockdown – something referee Steve Willis did not do – Roach would have won a huge upset and snatched the belt.
Roach did a blow-by-blow commentary on his YouTube channel, and pointed out another moment in the fight where he felt ‘Tank’ broke the rules.
“That’s when he tried to bite me. I ain’t even notice that until somebody said something … That’s crazy … That’s what he do, he get dirty.”

On the knee incident, his commentary was as expected.
“They let [Davis] go to the corner. That’s a disqualification, bro. Referee ain’t call time. Look at me, I’m telling him keep counting … 8-4 plus the knockdown, the scores would’ve been crazy. And, look, watch me still work though.”
Though the New York State Athletic Commission ruled to keep the result the same, the WBA may still order a rematch. Both fighters say they want it to happen, and ‘Tank’ has said he will be ready as early as April.
How the fight plays out is anybody’s guess, with the likes of coach Robert Garcia feeling Roach will win but others, like former ‘Tank’ Davis opponent Ryan Garcia, believing the champion will show his true level.
