Lamont Roach Jr has given an honest assessment of the credentials of Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis.

The 29-year-old from Washington challenged ‘Tank’ for his WBA lightweight title at the beginning of the month, putting on an impressive display against the pound-for-pound star, despite the fight being scored a majority decision draw after an all-action 12-rounds.

In a bizarre moment during the ninth round, Davis took a knee after being on the receiving end of a Roach jab. Referee Steve Willis failed to call a knockdown following this, much to the outrage of Roach who would have been declared the winner if the round had been scored a 10-8.

Speaking on the Come And Talk 2 Me podcast, Roach defended Davis for his skills and ability as a fighter, after coming in for criticism for the performance in their encounter.

“I definitely want the people to know that he was on his A game that night, I’m gonna tell people that 100%. Just because he didn’t live up to the expectations don’t mean that he fought a bad fight.

People saying he’s trash now and overrated, he’s a good fighter. I was in there thinking like a m**********r like I have to. It don’t take away nothing from him, that was why the fight was so good.”

It has been speculated that a rematch between the pair will take place within the next couple of months, with both fighters said to have already agreed on a second fight. ‘Tank’ Davis was reportedly in negotiations for an exhibition contest against Jake Paul, but it appears this has now been put on the back-burner to make way for the highly anticipated rematch.
