Lamont Roach Jr looks to have been offered another shot at a world lightweight title after drawing with Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis.
The 29-year-old from Washington, D.C. put on the performance of a lifetime against the WBA lightweight champion Davis in their bout on March 1, taking the 31-year-old all the way in a competitive 12-round contest which could have gone either way.
‘Tank’ sensationally took a knee during the ninth round of the fight, although referee Steve Willis failed to declare this as an official knockdown, sparking controversy amongst fans and pundits who have blasted the referee’s bizarre decision.
It is expected that a rematch between ‘The Reaper’ and Davis could happen next, although Roach appears to have been offered an alternative opportunity by an unbeaten lightweight world champion.
Speaking on the ‘It Is What It Is’ podcast, Roach claimed he has had a discussion with reigning WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson about a potential showdown in the near future.
“We already talked to Shakur and he’s on board. I talked to him personally and he was like ‘we can run it.’”
On social media Stevenson confirmed his offer stands:
“And if Lamont can’t get a rematch I got a big fight for him and a world title shot against me.. that’s my bro but we def can make something happen.”
Stevenson made the latest defence of his WBC crown on February 22 in a comprehensive stoppage victory against Britain’s Josh Padley, who had stepped in to face the highly-rated American champion on just a couple of days notice after his initial opponent Floyd Schofield had pulled out with illness at the beginning of fight week.
