Tyson Fury’s unique abilities in the boxing ring have made him an incredibly wealthy man, but that doesn’t stop one former fighter ‘feeling bad’ for him.
Across the course of his storied career, Fury has achieved almost everything boxing. He long held the revered lineal and WBC heavyweight titles, had a historic trilogy with Deontay Wilder, has secured impressive knockouts, won world titles on away soil, picked up several huge purses and even has his own hit book, Netflix show and energy drinks brand.
Until May, he had never tasted defeat in the boxing ring, but then he came up against the elite-level skills and famously strong mind of Oleksandr Usyk.
Across 12 rounds of action, both men had periods of success but it was the Ukrainian who came out on top after a particularly big ninth round that saw Fury take a count.
All eyes are now on the rematch on December 21 in which the Brit has vowed will see him regain the belts.
However, speaking to Seconds Out, former featherweight champion turned manager Barry McGuigan claimed that Fury will not be able to right the wrongs of the first fight.
“I feel bad for him, I don’t think he’ll ever be able to beat Usyk. The rematch, if it happens, Usyk will beat him more comprehensively. He was a whisper away from getting stopped in the last fight and I think next time Usyk will stop him.”
He then doubled down and said he thinks Fury is past his prime.
“It’s my experience looking at fighters over the years and looking at their bodies and their abilities to take a punch and they don’t have the same shape or condition and I just think his time as heavyweight champion is running out.
I honestly think had Fury fought [Anthony] Joshua, Joshua would have knocked him out. Usyk is too good for both of them. In the rematch, he will stop Fury.”
