Julio Cesar Chavez Sr has been offered a shock route back into boxing by a hall of fame icon.
The 62-year-old Mexican legend called time on his professional career back in 2005 having had 115 bouts throughout his glittering tenure, winning world titles across three divisions along the way.
He has had a number of exhibition contests since then however, with his most recent non-scored bout coming against the son of boxing legend Hector Camacho in the summer of 2021.
Chavez has remained inactive since his exhibition showdown with Camacho, but the 62-year-old could now be in line for a sensational return to the sport against Roy Jones Jr, who has offered the Mexican great a chance to face him on the undercard of Jake Paul vs. Chavez Jr on June 28.
In an interview with Prime Casino, Jones admitted he would agree to a showdown with Chavez, but claimed it would be up to the Mexican legend to decide whether the fight can actually come to fruition.
“I’ll fight Julio Cesar Chavez Snr on the undercard of Jake Paul v Chavez Jr. It would all depend on what Julio Cesar Chavez Snr thinks. It will work because we are both legends, and we know what we’re doing, so it’ll be good. It’ll be awesome. I would not want to kill him, and he’s not there to kill me, which he couldn’t, because he’s much smaller than me. But I’m not there to kill him.
We have to show people what we used to be, why people respected and revered us, so that we’re not there to take each other’s heads off. We have to show people true skills and understanding of what the sport is missing today – the skill level of boxing has dropped.”
Jones’ last ring appearance came in 2023 when he was defeated by MMA legend Anthony Pettis after their eight round bout in Wisconsin. The 56-year-old has remained open to a return to the ring ever since.
