A mega-fight between Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford is just months away from happening.

After months of speculation, the fight was announced just moments after Canelo defeated William Scull to capture the IBF super-middleweight title and become the only fighter in boxing history to achieve undisputed status at 168lbs on tow separate occasions.

‘Bud’ Crawford could make even more history for himself when he challenges Canelo for the undisputed super-middleweight championship at an unconfirmed venue in the USA on Saturday September 13, as the 37-year-old sets his sights on becoming an unprecedented three-division undisputed champion.

One man that has shown an interest in the intriguing battle between Canelo and Crawford is retired three-weight world champion James Toney, who famously moved up to heavyweight to knock out Evander Holyfield back in 2003.

Speaking to ESNEWS, Toney backed his countryman to prevail against the Mexican superstar, claiming he has the ‘skills’ to get the job done and that the size difference will not matter come fight night.

“I got [Terence] Crawford, all about skills. They all said that [size difference] when I fought [Evander] Holyfield, they all said that.”

Crawford has not fought at a weight class higher than light-middleweight, making his 154lb debut last August when he outpointed Israil Madrimov to capture the WBA world title, albeit in an underwhelming twelve round performance from the pound-for-pound star.

Canelo has been a force to be reckoned with at 168lbs since he made his division debut against Rocky Fielding back in 2018.

The 34-year-old from Guadalajara has gone on to secure victories against the likes of Gennady Golovkin, Callum Smith and Jaime Munguia amongst others, proving that he could be the toughest test of Crawford’s exceptional career.
