Despite an unprecedented three-weight jump, there are some in the boxing world who believe Terence Crawford can beat undisputed super-middleweight champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.
‘Bud’ Crawford has been calling for the fight since he secured all four belts at welterweight by stopping Errol Spence Jr. The win catapulted him to the top of the pound-for-pound list, and he wants to prove that further by challenging Canelo.
Although the Mexican hasn’t been keen on the idea, believing he will get no credit for beating a smaller man, Riyadh Season’s Turki Alalshikh has now given the bout his backing, meaning it’s more likely than ever given the money on the table.
Whilst plenty of pundits and fighters have said the disparity in weight is just too big for the American to overcome, he has two big-time backers in James Toney and Tim Bradley.
The two Hall of Fame fighters were recently interviewed by ES News, in which Toney said Crawford would stop Canelo.
“Yep [Crawford beats Canelo] by KO”
Enter Bradley, who agreed and then claimed that nobody is beating ‘Bud’ Crawford, including Canelo or his next scheduled opponent, Israel Madrimov.
“Hey, Crawford beats anybody he steps in the ring with. Anybody. No-one beats Terence Crawford. And everybody trying to age him out? Bro, the dude two weeks ago did fifteen four minute rounds. Twelve with Shakur [Stevenson] and three with Shakur’s cousin. He gonna crush this dude [Israel Madrimov] at 154.”
Crawford faces Madrimov for the WBA and WBO Super-Welterweight titles on August 3, his first fight at the weight and a chance to become four-division champion.
