A fighter’s pride often means there will be one opponent who could always tempt back to the ring. Heavyweight legend Lennox Lewis has revealed who that is for him.
Lewis has been talked about plenty in recent weeks as the last man to have been an undisputed champion in the banner division. He held the honour back in 1999 when there were only three major sanctioning bodies. In mid-May the baton was finally passed to Oleksandr Usyk who picked up all four world heavyweight titles, and the lineal title, when he beat Tyson Fury on points out in Saudi Arabia. He had also been undisputed cruiserweight champion and an Olympic gold medalist.
Lewis retired back in 2004 after managing to stop late stand-in Vitali Klitschko on cuts. It was a torrid fight that many think Lewis was lucky to win and, despite calls for a rematch, he hung up his gloves and has stayed away from the ring ever since.
However, speaking to Title Sports Network, the former three-time champion has now hinted that there is one man he would love to get in the ring with when he was asked how he thought the fight between his former opponent Mike Tyson and Jake Paul might go.
“Who knows, I don’t know, I won’t be in the ring, all I know is Mike Tyson better save some of Jake Paul for me.”
Tyson and Paul were scheduled to fight on July 20 but a flare-up of an ulcer has meant Tyson has had to pull out. The fight is yet to rescheduled.
Paul is a money man in the sport having brought a considerable audience from online content creation. He started out facing non-boxers but has since been in with Tommy Fury – his sole loss – and Andrew August in an attempt to start a legitimate run in the sport. The Tyson fight has received criticism for the 30 year age gap.
