Lennox Lewis is the latest to weigh in with his opinion on Tyson Fury’s latest return to the ring.
Lewis himself fought fairly consistently throughout his career and retired just once as champion, having beaten every man he had faced. Fury has not fought since 2024, when he took two consecutive losses to Oleksandr Usyk, who went on to become history’s first-ever two-time undisputed ruler.
Before that, Fury beat the likes of Dillian Whyte, Derek Chisora and most famous Wladimir Klitschko on away soil in 20-15 to pick up his maiden titles.
He is now just months away from what will surely be his final run of fights in the professional ring as he hunts down a world title once again, starting with a fight against the towering Russian Aslanbek Makhmudov, who most recently beat Dave Allen on points.
Speaking to iFL TV, Lewis was first asked if ‘The Gypsy King’ would have enough to best Makhmudov when the two fight and he had no doubt.
“Absolutely, absolutely.”
He was then asked what impact the long break might have on Fury.
“Sometimes people need a rest, it’s good that he likes rests, and he always comes back pretty strong.”
It’s true that Fury has taken large spells out of the ring before and has come back and managed to get back to his best, most famously when he returned form more than two years out of the ring and eventually went on to regain his WBC strap by knocking out Deontay Wilder twice in their trilogy fights.
However, he is now 37 with many more miles on the clock; only time will tell if he can do it again when he fights in the UK for the first time in four years in April.
