Oleksandr Usyk cemented himself as the greatest heavyweight of his generation last weekend.
The 38-year-old Ukrainian superstar stopped Britain’s Daniel Dubois in the fifth round of their historic rematch at Wembley Stadium in London, writing his name into the boxing history books once again by becoming the undisputed heavyweight champion for a second time.
Usyk dropped Dubois with a short right hand initially before closing the show with a thunderous left hook just moments after the hard-hitting Brit rose to his feet.
As he enters what appears to be the twilight of his outstanding professional career, Usyk could actually go on to announce his retirement from the sport a lot sooner than many fans had expected him to.
Speaking to ESPN prior to Usyk’s showdown with Dubois, former undisputed heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis admitted that he believes the Ukrainian superstar would be making the right decision in retiring from the sport should he be successful against the hard-hitting 27-year-old.
Despite defeating the likes of Dubois, Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury since he began campaigning at heavyweight, Usyk could make one final appearance before he inevitably hangs up his gloves, with a potential showdown with New Zealand’s Joseph Parker on the horizon.
It was announced earlier this week that Parker is now the mandatory challenger to Usyk’s WBO world heavyweight title, with many fans and analysts calling for the durable New Zealander to be given his chance to become a world champion once again.
Parker had held the WBO title between 2016 and 2018 until he was eventually dethroned by Joshua, falling short in his bid to become the unified heavyweight champion.
