Mike Tyson returns to the ring next month to face YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul. He has said previously that he may consider fighting on if he wins.
The bout, which has been criticised by many in the sport, will be contested with 14 ounce gloves over eight two minute rounds. Tyson, 30 years Paul’s senior, is fighting competitively for the first time since his retirement in 2005.
Speaking to TMZ Sports, former opponent Lennox Lewis said that the heavyweight legend should be able to ‘take the fight’ if his training camp has gone well.
“Well, I would hope that he would go into a fight where he would win. He’s a boxer, he knows how to protect himself, he knows how to throw body shots, how to cut off the ring. He’s younger than me, so it really depends on his mobility – if he can move fast around the ring. He’s going after a younger guy. We’re gonna have to see that.
I haven’t seen him lately to see if he can take it, but I’ve seen him with his shirt off, he looks like he’s muscular. Of course he can take it. If he’s in good shape he should be able to take it … Let’s hope [his health] is okay. You can’t see things from the outside that may be affecting you on the inside so you never know. I wouldn’t want to say he’s okay and then something happens.”
Asked about the potential of a rematch – likely an exhibition – following their 2002 battle in Memphis in which Lewis won by 8th round knockout, he said he was up for it but that it all depends on Tyson’s showing against Jake Paul.
“Let’s see how he makes out in this fight and then I’ll tell you after … I’ve spoken to Mike, yeah. I haven’t spoke about fighting cause he’s got a fight coming up … Yes [I would consider fighting him again]. Come on, baby. Let’s have it.”
