Lennox Lewis Didn’t Hesitate When Asked If Usyk Could Be Successful In His Era

Oleksandr Usyk has proven himself as one of the best heavyweights of the 21st century.

After becoming undisputed at cruiserweight, Usyk began his quest to repeat the feat at heavyweight when he moved up in weight in 2019.

It took him just two years and three fights in the division to become world champion, defeating Anthony Joshua to win the IBF, WBO and WBA titles.

A victory over Joshua in a rematch came next, before a win against Daniel Dubois then followed, paving the way for the undisputed showdown with WBC champion Tyson Fury.

Usyk won the fight in May to become undisputed champion, following in the footsteps of Evander Holyfield as the only men to be undisputed at both cruiserweight and heavyweight.

One man who knew Holyfield very well was Lennox Lewis, having fought ‘The Real Deal’ twice during the 1990s, winning one and drawing the other.

Lewis also took on the likes of Mike Tyson, Vitali Klitschko, Oliver McCall, and Hasim Rahman during his career, and was the last undisputed heavyweight champion before Usyk.

With that in mind, Lewis has told Boxing News whether he feels the Ukrainian would have been successful in his era during the 1990s.

“He would have got on good. Just look at how Evander Holyfield got on. Oleksandr Usyk is just the same size, just as good, and I think he would have do just as well.”

Usyk faces Fury in a rematch in December, and he has revealed whether he plans to keep fighting after that contest.
