Lennox Lewis was part of some of the biggest nights in boxing history. Now, the former heavyweight king has named the clash he wants to see the most.
For some Lewis is the greatest heavyweight of all time with a resume that stacks up against the best. During his 15 years as a professional Lewis became a three-time heavyweight champion and faced the likes of Evander Holyfield, Mike Tyson, Vitali Klitschko and Ray Mercer.
He retired in 2003 as one of the few to hang up the gloves having beaten every man he ever faced after two avenged losses.
The 58-year-old still takes a keen interest in the sport and in an interview with ‘The Schmo’, Lewis made it clear the one fight he wants to see happen – Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez vs David Benavidez.
“Canelo versus David Benavidez, I think that would be a great fight.”
Benavidez has long been chasing a showdown for the undisputed super-middleweight crown, but Canelo seems less keen to make the fight, insisting he’ll only face the ‘Mexican Monster’ for $200 million – a seemingly unrealistic amount.
The 27-year-old has grown tired of waiting for his shot and has moved up to light-heavyweight to chase more gold. He faces former champion Oleksandr Gvozdyk on June 15 on his 175lb debut. Turki Alalshikh, the man behind big time boxing in Saudi Arabia, has made it clear he wants Benavidez to face the winner of Artur Beterbiev-Dmitry Bivol if he comes through against Gvozdyk.
Canelo is coming off a dominant win against Jaime Munguía last time out and is expected to fight again this year with an opponent yet to be announced.
