Lennox Lewis Urges Heavyweight To Retire: “Leave The Sport With Your Faculties Intact”

Lennox Lewis will go down in the history books as one of the greatest heavyweights of all time.

Lewis, a former undisputed champion, amassed a boxing resume that stacks up against anyone’s. Over his 14 years as a professional ‘The Lion’ stepped into the ring against the likes of Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, Frank Bruno and Vitali Klitschko.

It was after his battle with Klitschko in 2003, a fight he won when the Ukrainian was stopped having suffered horrific cuts, that Lewis decided to call it a day and hang up the gloves.

Unlike many boxers after retiring, the 58-year-old has never made any attempt at a ring return and maintains his record of having defeated every fighter he ever faced – which twice required rematches following losses to Oliver McCall and Hasim Rahman.

One former champion that Lewis believes should now call it a day is hard hitting American, Deontay Wilder.

Once the most feared puncher in all of boxing, four defeats in his last five fights, including back to back losses to Joseph Parker and Zhilei Zhang, have taken away his aura and many feel he now looks gun shy.

Lewis took to social media to advise ‘The Bronze Bomber’ to step away from the sport before he ‘suffers any more damage’.

“The Bronze Bomber told us before the fight that he would retire if he didn’t win. I think that’s a wise decision.

He’s more than carved out a life in which he can take care of his daughter, so before he suffers any more damage, it’s best to leave the game with your faculties intact because there’s a lot more life to live after boxing.”

Wilder has yet to announce whether he intends to fight on or officially retire.
