Lennox Lewis Didn’t Hesitate When Asked If Deontay Wilder Should Retire

Lennox Lewis has had his say on whether Deontay Wilder should hang up his gloves.

Lewis certainly knows a thing or two about success in the banner division, having been a three-time heavyweight champion and a two-time lineal champion.

He was also the last undisputed heavyweight champion until Oleksandr Usyk achieved the feat recently with his victory over Tyson Fury.

Lewis has now spoken about the future of Wilder, who for an extended period was seen as the most fearsome puncher in all of boxing.

Wilder won the WBC heavyweight title back in 2015, and held it for five years after wins over the likes of Luis Ortiz, Bermane Stiverne, Chris Arreola and Dominic Breazeale.

‘The Bronze Bomber’ then had a memorable trilogy with Fury, with a controversial draw in the first bout followed by two knockout defeats which have seemingly sent Wilder’s career into tatters.

He has since suffered a dominant points loss to Joseph Parker, where Wilder hardly threw any of his trademark powerful punches, and was then devastatingly knocked out by Zhilei Zhang back in June.

It means that Wilder has now lost four of his last five fights, and Lewis has taken to social media to give a clear view on his future.

“The Bronze Bomber told us before the fight [with Zhilei Zhang] that he would retire if he didn’t win. I think that’s a wise decision.

He’s more than carved out a life in which he can take care of his daughter, so before he suffers any more damage, it’s best to leave the game with your faculties intact because there’s a lot more life to live after boxing.”

Wilder himself has recently spoken about the defeat to Zhang, and revealed a major injury he suffered heading into the bout.
