Lennox Lewis thinks there is only one man who can challenge the great Oleksandr Usyk.
For years during the 90s, Lewis himself was the man who sat atop the heavyweight division. ‘The Lion’ was a skilled boxer with a famously tough-to-beat jab and knockout power when he needed it. Although he suffered two upset losses – to Oliver McCall and Hasim Rahman – he avenged both before retiring in 2003, having become the undisputed champion in 1999 when he defeated Evander Holyfield.
Uysk became undisputed in the cruiserweight division in 2018, and six years later, he had also cleaned out the heavyweight division after beating Antony Joshua and Tyson Fury to claim all four major belts.
A second victory over Fury in December last year, and a second KO of Daniel Dubois in July, have cemented his position as one of the best to ever do it.
Speaking after the Ukrainian stopped ‘DDD,’ Lewis assessed who might pose him a challenge.
“I think Joseph Parker has the best chance right now. I think they’ve been freezing Joseph Parker out. Joseph Parker needs that next fight, so get him in there. Joseph Parker has been waiting for his chance. I don’t know why he hasn’t had it yet. I think he should be the next fight.”
Parker is a former WBO champion who surrendered his belt to Joshua, but has worked his way back into the mandatory position following a good run of victories, including points wins over Deontay Wilder and Zhilei Zhang and a KO of Martin Bakole in February. He is one possible opponent who could be up next for Usyk.
