Lennox Lewis, Daniel Dubois and Frank Bruno are three British heavyweights who have all secured their place heavyweight history as world champions.
Lewis is the most decorated of them all having been the undisputed champ back in 1999. The self-titled ‘pugilist specialist’ had plenty of epic nights and victories over the likes of Evander Holyfield, Mike Tyson, Bruno and Vitali Klitschko in his last fight in 2003, and beat every man he faced having avenged two upset losses to Oliver McCall and Hasim Rahman.
Bruno was a hugely popular star throughout his career and eventually won a world title at the fourth time of asking. After losing out in attempts against Tyson, Lewis and Tim Witherspoon, he finally had a belt put around his waist after beating McCall at Wembley in 1995.
Dubois is the most recent heavyweight champion of the world having been elevated to IBF ruler after beating Fillip Hrgovic in June, and then backing it up with a career-best performance against Anthony Joshua in September when he stopped him inside five rounds.
In a round of winner stays on with MailSportBoxing, Lewis was asked to pick a victor between Dubois and Bruno.
“Frank Bruno.”
Dubois-Bruno in the same era would have been an extremely intriguing all-British affair. With 38 knockouts in 40 wins for Bruno and Dubois being regarded as one of the hardest hitters of his era, not many would back it to go the distance.
Bruno retired after losing his world title to Tyson in a second fight with the American in 1996 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Dubois is now waiting to find out who he will fight when he returns to the ring in February. The current frontrunner is Joseph Parker but Martin Bakole has also thrown his name into the mix.
