Lennox Lewis Sums Up Oleksandr Usyk’s Chances Of Being Champion In His Era In Just 5 Words

Lennox Lewis has been asked to consider how Oleksandr Usyk would have fared if he had fought back during his era.

Lewis is an all-time legend of the sport and, before Usyk, he was the last undisputed heavyweight champion of the world back in 1999 when he beat Evander Holyfield.

He lost only twice across his entire career to Oliver McCall and Hasim Rahman, but avenged both of those upset defeats with knockout wins in the rematches. He retired in 2003 with a record of 41 wins from 44 fights, having also beaten the likes of Mike Tyson and Frank Bruno.

Usyk is an Olympic Gold medallist turned undisputed cruiserweight champion who moved up to the banner division to become undisputed again and has beaten all comers, including Tyson Fury, Daniel Dubois and Anthony Joshua, all twice.

Speaking to Sky Sports Boxing, Lewis was asked how Usyk would have fared back in his era.

“He would’ve fared really good.”

He then explained why and compared him to his old foe Holyfield.

“He’s doing something Evander Holyfield did. In this era, he’s beaten all the big guys and the guys that were in front of him so he’s done a great job.”

Usyk maybe has only one or two fights left, and has suggested that he might even take on Jake Paul in MMA before walking away from combat sports altogether.

Another contender could also become clear when later this month, Fabio Wardley and Joseph Parker fight it out for the right to challenge Usyk for his WBO belt.
