Lennox Lewis thinks one former world heavyweight champion should be hanging up his gloves.
Lewis had a storied and hugely successful career and even managed to get the difficult aspect of retirement right.
His last fight was one of the toughest against late stand-in opponent Vitali Klitschko back in June 2003. He won by sixth-round technical knockout when the contest had to be stopped due to a terrible cuts above the Ukrainian’s eyes.
He decided against a rematch and retired as the WBC champion having previously been undisputed. Other great wins came over the likes of Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield and Frank Bruno, and Lewis beat every man he faced by the time he left the sport behind, making his one of the best resumes of modern times.
Posting on twitter, ‘Lewis suggested it is time that former WBC heavyweight ruler and knockout specialist Deontay Wilder now leaves the sport behind after his most recent loss to Zhilei Zhang back in June 2024.
“Deontay Wilder told us before the fight that he would retire if he didn’t win. I think that’s a wise decision.
He’s more than carved out a life in which he can take care of his daughter, 💪🏾 so before he suffers any more damage, it’s best to leave the game with ur faculties intact because there’s a LOT more life to live after boxing.”
Wilder has also lost twice by KO to Tyson Fury, and on points to Joseph Parker. Despite this, he is set to return in June against Tyrrell Herndon in Wichita, Kansas, despite having been out of action for almost a year.
