Former unified welterweight champion Jaron Ennis is edging closer to finalising his return to the ring.

The 28-year-old from Philadelphia was last in action in October when he stopped Portugal’s Uisma Lima in the opening round of their clash at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia to capture the vacant WBA interim super-welterweight title.

‘Boots’ put on an outstanding display against Lima in what was his first ring appearance at 154lbs, having previously campaigned at welterweight and held the unified WBA and IBF world titles.

With rumours already circulating about what will be next for the unbeaten American superstar, it has been reported by multiple sources that Ennis is set to lock horns with countryman Vergil Ortiz Jr in the new year.

Ennis and Ortiz faced off just moments after the latter produced an emphatic second round stoppage win over Erickson Lubin on November 8, making the second successful defence of his WBC interim super-welterweight title in the process.

As reported by Boxing Scene, the respective teams of Ennis and Ortiz began a six-hour negotiation session earlier this week, with one insider in particular revealing that there is still a way to go before the fight can be finalised.

“If it was bad and had no chance, I would tell you. Deals like this do not get done in a day.”

Ortiz has also been linked with WBC super-welterweight champion Sebastian Fundora, with reports suggesting that the 27-year-old from Texas is interested in pursuing an opportunity to become a world champion before he turns his attention to a showdown with ‘Boots’.
