A former British world champion with experience of fighting both men thinks he knows who would have won if Joe Calzaghe and Carl Froch had ever come to blows in the ring.
This super-middleweight clash between Froch and Calzaghe is one of the most discussed fights that never was. Both reigned supreme in their division during their long and successful careers, in particular Welshman Calzaghe, who famously retired unbeaten after 46 contests, including his final two up at light heavyweight versus Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones Jr.
‘The Pride of Wales’ is the slightly older of the two, so he came up and established himself first, though Froch believes he was lucky to get a decision against a certain former WBC super-middleweight champion Robin Reid back in 1999.
‘The Cobra’ himself also fought Reid in 2007 and stopped the then 36-year-old in the fourth round, and both men also fought Kessler, with Froch winning once and losing once and Calzaghe taking a win.
Now, Reid, who retired in 2012 with a record of 42 wins and 27 KOs, has spoken to Hannibal Boxing about what he thinks who have happened if the two had fought.
“If it’s the Calzaghe that I fought, I think Froch would have done it with his right hand. Calzaghe threw a lot of punches, but they weren’t devastating punches. I just think Froch would have walked through him.”
Many other people have a different view on the outcome, including Calzaghe’s former promoter Frank Warren, who backs his old charge to have got it done.
