A former rival of Lennox Lewis believes there is just one fighter who is even more skillful than the heavyweight great.
The British-Canadian icon had an outstanding professional career which culminated in him capturing a version of the world heavyweight championship on three separate occasions.
He produced just over 40 victories as a professional, defeating the likes of Vitali Klitschko, Evander Holyfield and Mike Tyson prior to his retirement from the sport in February 2004.
Lewis did suffer a couple of defeats along the way however, the first of which coming in September of 1994 when he was stopped in the 2nd round of his showdown with Chicago’s Oliver McCall.
‘The Lion’ did get his revenge several years later when he knocked out McCall in the 5th round of their Las Vegas rematch to reclaim the WBC world heavyweight title.
Speaking to The Ring Magazine, McCall overlooked Lewis when revealing the most skillful opponent of his career, naming none other than the legendary Larry Holmes.
“I would have to say Larry Holmes as far as pure boxing skills. Me at my best and him at 25 percent (when we fought) and (him) being champion when I was a kid. He’s my dude as far as skills.”
McCall got the better of Holmes when they clashed at Caesars Palace back in April 1995, defeating ‘The Easton Assassin’ via unanimous decision at the conclusion of their 12-round WBC heavyweight title bout.
Holmes would go on to have a further nine professional bouts before he eventually announced his retirement from the sport following a victory over Eric ‘Butterbean’ Esch in 2002.
