Manny Pacquiao Now Focused On One Man For Next Fight: “He Wants To Make History”

Filipino great Manny Pacquiao has his sights set on attempting to make boxing history yet again, as he gears up to make his 74th ring appearance.

The 46-year-old eight division world champion made a sensational return to the ring back in July, fighting to a majority decision draw against reigning WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios in Las Vegas.

It has been argued by some however that ‘PacMan’ was the deserving winner on the night, as he put on an impressive display against the younger and more active champion, despite being away from the ring for just shy of half a decade.

As rumours begin to circulate about what could be next on Pacquiao’s agenda, the Filipino icon reportedly has his sights set on facing one reigning world champion in particular.

In an interview with World Boxing News, Pacquiao’s manager Sean Gibbons revealed that ‘the goal is still the same’ for his fighter, as he claims ‘PacMan’ is targeting a showdown with WBA welterweight champion Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero.

“The goal is still the same. When Manny decided to come back, he was looking for meaningful fights. He was granted the right—respectfully and correctly—by the WBC to challenge for a world title. Unfortunately, he came up on the wrong end of a suspect decision [against Mario Barrios]. But the goal remains: to break his own record, to make history, to win a welterweight title. He wants to be the oldest person to do it at 47 years old. Rolly Romero has the WBA belt, so he is the target.”

Romero was elevated to full WBA welterweight champion back in August, after former champion Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis opted to vacate the belt ahead of his move up to super-welterweight.

‘Rolly’ last appeared back in May as he put on a career-best performance to defeat countryman Ryan Garcia via unanimous decision at Times Square in New York City.
