Manny Pacquiao remains keen on the idea of a showdown with Gervonta Davis.
The 46-year-old Filipino great made a sensational return to the ring last month, fighting to a majority decision draw against reigning WBC Welterweight World Champion Mario Barrios at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on July 19.
Pacquiao has said that he will likely be continuing with his boxing career after drawing with ‘El Azteca’, and his advisor Sean Gibbons says that the eight-division world champion is seriously considering a showdown with WBA Lightweight World Champion ‘Tank’ Davis next.
Davis held on to his belt against countryman Lamont Roach Jr last time out in March, although this didn’t come without controversy after the fight was declared a split decision draw with many feeling the challenger had done enough.
Speaking in an interview prior to facing Barrios, Pacquiao showed his interest in the match-up but said that ‘Tank’ must agree to a catchweight of 145lbs at a minimum.
“If he comes up to 147 then we can fight … 145 maybe.”
Davis has only fought as high as 140, coincidentally also against Barrios, whom he stopped in the eleventh round back in 2021.
Pacquiao was then asked how he would handle the ‘explosiveness’ of the hard-hitting WBA lightweight champion.
“Oh that’s not a problem for me because I’m experienced fighter.”
Other options for Pacquiao outside of a Barrios rematch are two of Davis’ former opponents: Ryan Garcia and Rolando Romero. As for ‘Tank’, who was recently arrested on a domestic violence charge, he was expected to rematch Roach, but the challenger has recently said that he is now sceptical it ever happens.
