Antonio Margarito Names The Best Fighter He Faced And It’s Not Manny Pacquiao

Three-time world welterweight champion Antonio Margarito has revealed the best fighter that he ever crossed paths with.

The California-native had considerable success throughout the course of his storied 23-year professional career, which spanned between 1994 and 2017.

He captured a version of the world welterweight championship on three occasions during his tenure, defeating the likes of Miguel Cotto, Sergio Martinez and Frankie Randall along the way.

Margarito found himself at the center of intense controversy back in 2009 when it was revealed that his hand wraps had been tampered with by his trainer Javier Capetillo ahead of his clash with Shane Mosley

It was later confirmed that his wraps had contained plaster and had to be re-done just moments before his showdown with ‘Sugar’ Shane, who stopped him in the ninth round of their meeting at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The controversy cast doubt on Margorito’s previous victories, leading many to believe it was a standard practice for the team.

In a round of ‘Best I’ve Faced’ with The Ring Magazine, Margarito made no mistake in naming Mosley when he was asked to reveal the best overall fighter that he ever shared a ring with, as he claims the multi-weight world champion ‘had it all’.

“Shane had it all – hand speed, footwork, punch, defence – and he could take a punch.”

Mosley cemented his status as one of the best fighters of the early 2000s, where he became a world champion in the welterweight and super-welterweight divisions.

He produced a number of legacy-defining victories during the peak of his career, defeating the likes of Fernando Vargas, Ricardo Mayorga and Oscar De La Hoya before he walked away from the sport in 2016.
