Mexican fighting legend Juan Manuel Marquez has made a clear prediction for Saul ‘Canelo‘ Alvarez versus Terence Crawford.
The fight, for Canelo’s undisputed super-middleweight crown, takes place at the Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas on September 13 and sees Crawford jump up two divisions from his last fight. It will be streamed live on Netflix.
Speaking to the media, Marquez broke the fight down in its simplest terms, believing a good big man to beat a good little one.
“I think it will be a good fight, but I think the main difference is the weight. The advantage is for Canelo Alvarez. It’s two divisions … but let me tell you something, Terence Crawford is a great fighter. He moves very well in the ring. He uses speed and he’s a smart fighter. But the weight is important for Canelo.”
Asked for his official prediction, he backed his countryman to win on points.
“I think Canelo by decision.”
Canelo has not scored a stoppage since his win against Caleb Plant to become undisputed back in 2021, though he has knocked down John Ryder, Jermell Charlo and Edgar Berlanga in that time. His latest outing was an underwhelming twelve rounder against William Scull.
Crawford – whose trainer Brian ‘BoMac’ McIntyre is confident they will end the fight inside the distance – was on a run of 11 stoppages before he faced Israil Madrimov last time out, a worrying sign for some given that it was his first and only fight at 154 lbs and he will face Alvarez at 168.
