Marvin Hagler Named The Best He Faced After Legendary Battles With Duran, Leonard And Hearns

Marvin Hagler led the charge of middleweight division’s golden era.

His reign as the undisputed king at 160lbs in the 1980s was defined by his clashes with the other members of boxing’s ‘Four Kings’: Sugar Ray Leonard, Thomas Hearns, and Roberto Duran. Each meeting between the fighters carried its own unique narrative and drama.

Hagler first faced Roberto Duran in November 1983. Despite Duran’s reputation as a fierce competitor, the American beat the Panamanian over fifteen rounds, securing a unanimous decision and retaining his middleweight crown.

Two years later, in April 1985, ‘Marvelous’ Marvin engaged in an unforgettable war with ‘Hitman’ Hearns. The short but brutal bout saw both men trade ferocious blows before Hagler stopped Hearns in the third round in what is still considered one of the most electrifying fights in boxing history.

The final chapter of Hagler’s ‘Four Kings’ saga came against Leonard in April 1987. After a three-year layoff, Leonard returned for the challenge. Leonard utilized his superior speed and movement to outpoint Hagler in a split decision victory, a result that remains debated by boxing fans to this day and ultimately led to Hagler’s retirement.

When asked by the Ring Magazine to name the best opponent he faced, he opted for Duran, citing his speed and skills.

“He caught me for three rounds at the start of the fight, which I didn’t understand … I would still say Roberto Duran [is the most skillful]. I loved that fight the most because between the both of us it brought out our skill … I would say Roberto Duran was [the best overall]. He was very experienced.”

Duran was a four-weight world champion known for his ferocious, brawling style and incredible punching power. For his record against the four kings, though without important context of weight and activity, was just one win against Leonard, two losses, and was defeated by both Hagler and Hearns.
