World Champion Wants Floyd Mayweather To End Retirement And Face Him: “I Want Revenge”

Floyd Mayweather is being targeted for a showdown with a reigning world champion.

The 48-year-old from Grand Rapids, Michigan called time on his professional career back in 2017, just a few months after he defeated MMA fighter Conor McGregor in their monumental crossover bout in Las Vegas.

After exiting the professional ranks, ‘Money’ has took part in a number of exhibition contests where he has faced Logan Paul, Tenshin Nasukawa and John Gotti III amongst a few others.

He has been linked with an official return to the sport over the last 12 months, and could finally be in line to face one man in particular.

It’s been almost 12 years since Mayweather handed pound-for-pound star Canelo Alvarez the first defeat of his career, but the 34-year-old from Mexico has had his sights set on revenge ever since.

In an interview with DAZN Boxing, Canelo reiterated his interest in facing Mayweather in a rematch of their 2013 showdown, but admits that it is highly unlikely to take place anytime soon.

“Yes, of course [I would like to fight Mayweather again]. I would love the opportunity to get revenge. Obviously we know it’s not going to happen but yes, I would love to get rid of that little thorn.”

Since suffering that defeat to Mayweather, the Mexican superstar has gone on to win world titles at middleweight, super-middleweight and light-heavyweight.

He became the first fighter within the ‘four belt era’ to capture the undisputed championship at 168lbs when he defeated Caleb Plant in 2021, and repeated the feat recently when he defeated IBF champion William Scull by unanimous decision.

Canelo is now set to meet Terence Crawford in a mega-fight on September 12, as he looks to add another huge name to his exceptional resume.
