Floyd Mayweather Jr became the first man to defeat Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez back in 2013.

The retired five-division world champion put on a masterclass against the Mexican star to unify the WBC and WBA world light-middleweight titles twelve years ago, although the judges scorecards suggested that the fight was a lot closer than it actually was.

Mayweather drew the curtain on his career just four years later, retiring from the sport with a perfect unbeaten record of 50-0, whilst Canelo has gone on to become arguably the face of the sport and currently reigns as the undisputed super-middleweight champion.

Canelo will defend his crown against fellow pound-for-pound star Terence Crawford on Saturday September 13 at an unconfirmed venue in the United States, although Las Vegas looks set to play host to the ‘mega-fight’ between two of boxing’s biggest names.

Speaking in the post-fight interview after his showdown with Canelo, Mayweather was asked to share his thoughts on the power of the Mexican star after there had been concerns that it would be too much for him.

“Not at all.”

He then claimed the power of Canelo was nothing that he hadn’t already felt throughout his career.

“It’s nothing I never felt before after being in the sport over 20 years.”

Mayweather’s claims could leave ‘Bud’ feeling confident going into what is unquestionably the toughest test of his career, as he makes the significant jump in weight to potentially become the first fighter in male boxing history to achieve undisputed status in three weight classes.
