Floyd Mayweather Delivers Verdict On Terence Crawford vs Jaron Ennis: “Are You About Legacy?”

Jaron Ennis continues to target a Terence Crawford fight despite the latter leaving welterweight for a fresh challenge.

When Crawford vacated the belts at 147, ‘Boots’ benefited by picking up the IBF title but also missed out on the fight he really wanted.

With an impressive defence against David Avanesyan done and dusted, he has said he would be willing to follow ‘Bud’ up to super-welterweight to make it happen, but the sentiment has not been returned with Crawford much more keen on challenging Saul ‘Canelo‘ Alvarez at super-middleweight.

In an interview with FightHype, multi-division world champion and 50-0 undefeated icon Floyd Mayweather said it would be ‘a helluva fight.’

“I that’d be a helluva fight with Boots Ennis. Like we alway say, somebody gotta give you a chance, an opportunity. Somebody gotta give Boots the opportunity and chance, whether it’s Terence or somebody else.

It seems like it’s been difficult for Crawford to get the Spence fight done, it’s been difficult for him to get the Canelo fight done, so his other option is probably Boots Ennis.”

Mayweather was in a similar situation in 2013 when he faced Canelo. The Mexican – who lost by majority decision on the night – went on to dominate in the sport both in terms of performances in the ring and by the numbers. The risk paid off for Mayweather, who has a win on his record that has aged incredibly well.

Asked if the risk of the Crawford-Ennis fight outweighs the reward, Mayweather said that Crawford should be considering what he wants.

“You gotta ask yourself is it about the legacy? Is it about the money? Is it about both? I’m not in these fighters’ heads so I don’t know. But if you do want to fight him, fight him, if you don’t, don’t. Fight somebody else. Do what makes you happy.”

Crawford has said he is looking for the fight that brings ‘way more to his bank account and way more to his legacy’ – unfortunately for Ennis, he says that’s Canelo.

The 36-year-old returns to the ring this weekend to face WBA Super-Welterweight Champion Israil Madrimov in a bid to become a four-division champion. If he wins, Riyadh Season’s Turki Alalshikh has made it clear that Canelo will receive an offer for the fight but has also expressed interest in having ‘Boots’ move up to 154 to challenge Crawford.
