Terence Crawford has made it clear that his ultimate goal right now in boxing is to challenge Saul ‘Canelo‘ Alvarez at super-middleweight.
Even with his debut at super-welterweight coming up this weekend, there’s still two weight classes to jump to make it happen and the Mexican has been dismissive of it in the past because of that fact, saying that he would get little credit for beating a smaller man.
Still, ‘Bud’ pushes on, perhaps only beaten in his desire for the fight by David Benavidez who has fought his way through the names at 168 to earn a shot at Canelo.
Neither man has been successful, at least not this year, as Canelo will face Edgar Berlanga on September 14, defending three of the four major belts after being stripped of the IBF.
Speaking on the matter, 50-0 fighting legend Floyd Mayweather told FightHype that Crawford and Benavidez should fight each other.
“I think he’s a super, super, super skilful fighter. Very talented fighter. I thought about this. If he wants to go to 168 and he wants to fight Canelo, and Benavidez wants to fight Canelo. They can’t get Canelo, they can fight each other – Benavidez and Crawford. Both you guys are chasing one fighter, y’all can’t get that fight then y’all should say we’ll fight each other.”
It’s an interesting prospect but one that’s extremely unlikely. ‘Bud’ has said in the past that it’s Canelo’s name he wants on his record and not simply a bigger man and Benavidez has recently decided to campaign at light-heavyweight for the foreseeable after failing to entice Canelo into a defence.
Crawford returns this weekend against WBA 154 Champion Israil Madrimov with a win not only making a four-division champion but also allowing Riyadh Season’s Turki Alalshikh to send Canelo a formal offer.
