Floyd Mayweather has been quick to respond to the collapse of the planned Gervonta Davis vs. Lamont Roach rematch.
Davis and Roach initially met back in March, with ‘Tank’ putting his WBA lightweight title on the line. It was expected to be a straightforward title defence for Davis, but it turned out to be anything but, as it ended in a majority decision draw.
A second meeting between the pair was set to occur this summer, but instead ‘Tank’ will be involved in a shock match-up against Youtuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul, despite ‘The Problem Child’ weighing nearly 100lbs heavier than his rival.
It’s left Roach wondering who his next opponent will be, and Mayweather has now stepped in to try and offer an alternative fight.
Posting on Instagram, the retired superstar announced that he now wants Roach to to defend his WBA super-featherweight title against his man Curmel Moton.
“Let’s make this fight happen!! Curmel Moron is already IN, Roach let’s do it. Even if I have to put up the money.”
Moton is an unbeaten 19-year-old that is tipped for big things in the sport, and currently holds an unbeaten record of 8-0, with six of those victories coming by knockout.
Despite Mayweather’s wishes, it is unlikely that a fight with Roach will take place due to Moton’s limited experience, with Roach potentially targeting the likes of WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson instead, although those hopes may have also been dashed after it was revealed that an opponent has already agreed to face Stevenson in January.
