Jake Paul has set his sights on moving even closer to securing a world title shot.
The 28-year-old from Cleveland, Ohio, who has won all but one of his professional fights, will face former WBC world middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr on Saturday June 28 at the Honda Center in Anaheim.
Paul’s last outing came against the now retired heavyweight legend Mike Tyson last November, outpointing the 58-year-old after their controversial eight round showdown at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
‘The Problem Child’ has expressed his desire to become a legitimate world champion on more than one occasion, but it remains to be seen whether the 28-year-old will ever be given the opportunity to achieve his dream, especially considering the level of opposition that he has opted to face since his debut five years ago.
In an interview with TMZ, former pound-for-pound star Floyd Mayweather Jr gave an honest assessment on whether he thinks Paul could actually achieve world honours at some point in the near future, claiming when he fights a ‘real’ fighter it won’t end well.
“Jake Paul, as of right now for what he’s doing it’s good for what he’s doing, but when it’s time to fight an actual real fighter, it’s gonna be bad! But one think I like about him, one thing I do is that he’s selling it and he’s making good money and he’s entertaining, I like that.
As long as he continues to fight MMA guys ant YouTubers then he’s going to continue to look good and shine, but once he fights a real fighter, a real fighter that can really fight, then it’s not going to be that good.”
Paul is expected to defeat Chavez in impressive fashion if he is to be in consideration for a world title shot, which could come at cruiserweight or potentially at bridgerweight. The 28-year-old is also said to be in negotiations for a bout against WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis, which is rumoured to be in contention to happen before the end of the year.
