“I Beat Him!”: Floyd Mayweather Rival Says He Does Not Deserve Famous Undefeated Record

Floyd Mayweather never tasted defeat during his professional career.

The boxing legend retired in 2017 with a perfect 50-0 unbeaten record, having become a five-weight world champion from super-featherweight to super-welterweight in the process.

He was viewed as the long-time pound-for-pound number one and defeated a number of huge names throughout his career, including the likes of Manny Pacquiao, Canelo Alvarez, Shane Mosley and Miguel Cotto.

There is one man who feels he should have got his hand raised against Mayweather when they met though, and that is Oscar De La Hoya.

The two fighters went up against each other back in May 2007, with Mayweather stepping up to 154lbs for the first time to challenge De La Hoya for his WBC super-welterweight title.

The bout went the 12 round distance, and saw Mayweather claim a split decision win after scores of 116-112, 115-113 and 113-115, the only time in his career that a judge ruled against him in a fight.

De La Hoya has now revealed that he disagrees with the outcome, telling Undeniable With Dan Patrick that even Mayweather’s father Floyd Sr told De La Hoya’s sister the same thing.

“I gave him a good fight. Floyd Sr is a very honest individual. I guess he said ‘your brother won.’ I felt I did. It’s one of those fights where it could have gone either way. I felt I did enough.”

‘The Golden Boy’ has made his case stronger in the past, telling ES News in no uncertain terms that he feels he won the fight.

“My fight with him [Mayweather]. Do I feel I beat him? I beat him. I beat him! So you want to say you’re the best ever. I’m going to say that you’re not. A lot of people are saying you’re not. It’s the truth. I’m not bringing him down. Don’t be telling people you’re ‘The Best Ever.’”

Mayweather also had a contentious fight with Jose Luis Castillo back in 2002, and fellow boxing great Roberto Duran has claimed that the American should have lost that bout.
