A former sparring partner of Floyd Mayweather believes one current star in particular surpasses the five-weight world champion.
‘Money’ Mayweather is widely considered to be the greatest fighter to have ever laced up a pair of gloves, although this has been the topic of many heated discussions within the boxing community over the years.
The Michigan-native captured numerous major world titles across five weight classes during his decorated 21-year professional career, ranging from super-featherweight to light-middleweight.
Mayweather remained unbeaten throughout his entire tenure, defeating each of the 50 opponents that he crossed paths with, including the likes of Oscar De La Hoya, Juan Manuel Marquez and Manny Pacquiao.
In the eyes of former unified world title challenger Jack Catterall however, there is one fighter in particular that is even greater than the 2021 Hall of Fame inductee.
Speaking to The Ring Magazine, Catterall sensationally claimed that he believes unbeaten star Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis is a better fighter than Mayweather, having sparred both men during his own career.
“Mayweather, Canelo, I’ve sparred some unbelievable fighters. But I would say Boots is No. 1. Bear in mind that some of them I sparred 10 years ago but even now, Boots is sparring the best version of me and that’s my opinion.
“It’s just the size of him, the spitefulness, speed, the power. I do believe he’s the full package and I hope we get to see the fights that we want to see him in so he can show his full potential. Because I believe he’s pound-for-pound No. 1 material.”
‘Boots’ Ennis has established himself as one of the most exciting fighters in the sport throughout his career to date. The 28-year-old from Philadelphia previously held the unified WBA and IBF welterweight titles, and has recently made the move up to 154lbs where he is expected to fight for a world title at his new weight class within the next 12 months.
