Floyd Mayweather Sr Believes His Son Should Have Lost One Fight During Unbeaten Pro Career

Floyd Mayweather Jr’s father and former trainer, Floyd Sr, has sensationally claimed that he believes his son should have been handed at least one defeat during his glittering career.

‘Money’ Mayweather is often credited with being one of, if not the greatest fighter to have ever laced up a pair of boxing gloves, an opinion that is shared by fans and analysts around the globe.

The Michigan-native became a world champion in no less than five weight classes during his decorated 19-year professional career, ranging from super-featherweight to light-middleweight.

Mayweather produced a number of legacy-defining victories during this time, defeating boxing icons such as Canelo Alvarez, Oscar De La Hoya, Juan Manuel Marquez and Manny Pacquiao along the way.

Despite his success and being one of the few fighters in the sports history to retire unbeaten, Mayweather’s father Floyd Sr believes the former pound-for-pound great did not deserve to be handed one win in particular.

In a resurfaced interview with HBO’s Larry Merchant, Floyd Sr admitted that he believes his son was lucky to be declared the winner at the conclusion of his 2007 showdown with Oscar De La Hoya.

“I’m just gonna be honest with you, man. If you want to call fights by scoring, points system, who’s throwing more punches, you had to give it to Oscar. If you’re just going on a guy hitting a guy with single shots, you have to give it to my son.

“My son had good defence, he caught a lot of punches with his shoulder and his arm, but it’s still about a guy throwing punches. If he touches you, he’s scoring … I thought the fight was a close fight, it’s just where the point system goes. If you look at the point system, who’s touching who the most … You’re gonna have to give it to Oscar if you’re going by point system.”

Mayweather controversially defeated De La Hoya via split decision back in May of 2007, dethroning ‘The Golden Boy’ of his WBC light-middleweight title in what was the third defeat of his illustrious career.
