Mike Tyson has retired from the sport of boxing for a second time following a 59th fight against Jake Paul.
The controversial contest was a far cry away from the level Tyson fought at in his prime but, at almost sixty years old, he was unable to put on a worthy show against Paul, 27.
In the aftermath, many in the sport have said they believe the fight was ‘rigged’ or ‘scripted’. Paul’s promotional company, MVP, has come out strongly against the allegations, as has Tyson’s som Amir, who told Seconds Out his father simply ‘gassed out.’
However, speaking to 7 News Miami, ‘Iron’ Mike was adamant that he wasn’t tired at the end of the bout – something most viewers will disagree with.
“Magically. It just happened so quick. Eight rounds were over fast. I wasn’t tired. I wasn’t sweating. I didn’t understand that.”
In fact, the heavyweight icon looked unable to do much in the way of boxing after the second round and Paul was able to cruise to a wide points win.
One saving grace was that any worries for the 58-year-old pre-fight, particularly how his body would respond to a knockout blow, didn’t have to be dealt with.
Tyson has since confirmed his retirement from the sport, but tells 7 News that ‘the sky is the limit’ for what he does next.
“As I said before, the sky is the limit. Anything I want, I’m just happy to be able to do it. I’m very grateful to have the opportunity to be able to do everything that I want to do in this and beyond.”
Paul forges ahead as one of the most-discussed and called out fighters in the sport.
