Mike Tyson will be giving away over 30 years when he steps into the ring against Jake Paul at the end of the year.
Since it was announced criticism and genuine concern have been raised over the bout. Many involved in the sport, including former world champion Anthony Joshua, have expressed their ‘worry’ for ‘Iron’ Mike returning to the ring at 58-years-old against a fresh, albeit relative novice, 27-year-old.
The fight was originally scheduled to take place on July 20, but an ulcer flare up to the legendary former champion caused a four month postponment.
“I want to thank my fans around the world for their support and understanding during this time. Unfortunately, due to my ulcer flareup, I have been advised by my doctor to lighten my training for a few weeks to rest and recover.
My body is in better overall shape than it has been since the 1990s and I will be back to my full training schedule soon. Jake Paul, this may have bought you some time, but in the end you will still be knocked out and out of boxing for good. I appreciate everyone’s patience and can’t wait to deliver an unforgettable performance later this year.”
During the press conference, it was put to Tyson about people’s concerns over the age gap, something he dismissed in typically brutal fashion.
“I don’t see too many people critical about it, look at this [points to crowd], ha ha ha. Tell me who has been critical, name somebody.
Picture me losing to Jake Paul. I don’t see it.”
And in response to Deontay Wilder’s voicing his fear over the fight he told Esquire ‘he’s not who I am’.
“Then let Mike get hurt. You don’t have to worry about paying my bills.
Everyone says this makes no sense, but he’s how old? He’s not who I am. He can’t go to Mongolia and have somebody know who the f*** he is.”
Paul vs Tyson will take place on November 15 at the AT&T Stadium in Texas and will be streamed live on Netflix.
