Mike Tyson returned to boxing at 58-years-old to take on a man thirty years his junior in Jake Paul.
The promotion was bombastic, the undercard good and the event record-breaking. The main event, however, was underwhelming and hard to watch for those who appreciated ‘Iron’ Mike in his prime.
At 58, Tyson was a shadow of his former self and looked only slightly dangerous for a minute or two. From then on, Paul coasted to a unanimous decision. Thankfully, he did not score a knockout after so many voiced the dangers of it pre-fight.
Aside from a big purse, many feel the eight-rounder was in poor taste and taints the professional record of Tyson, its last entry being back in 2005.
Tyson has now revealed in an interview with FOX Sports Radio that, post-fight, he pondered exactly the same question as most boxing fans have been asking for months.
“Why did I do that?”
In the interview, the former undisputed heavyweight champion said he was coming down from the high of the fight week.
“The day after I asked my wife, ‘why did I do that?’ I just don’t know what the hell goes on. They were just supporting me.
“That fight was such a big ascension, I was so up, so high, the fight’s over, boom, I’m kinda depressed a little bit. You’ve got to get back into that living situation. We’re fighters. We were training for nine months.”
Though he alluded to another fight in the ring when he was being interviewed immediately after his loss, Tyson has since confirmed that it was his last time stepping through the ropes professionally. It is a decision his family welcomes.
