Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and Terence Crawford are just months away from locking horns in a ‘mega-fight’.
The pound-for-pound stars are set to clash this September in what will be a defence of Canelo’s unified super-middleweight world titles. The stakes could be raised even higher beforehand though, with Canelo pencilled in to face IBF super-middleweight champion William Scull on May 3 as he bids to become a two-time undisputed champion at 168lbs.
One man who has shown an interest in the highly anticipated showdown is retired heavyweight legend Mike Tyson, who revealed on the It Is What It Is podcast that he believes the huge weight difference between the fighters will be crucial.
“Too much weight. I don’t like that fight. You know he had a close fight with the last guy he fought [Madrimov], because this guy was big and he was awkward, he shouldn’t have fought that guy.”
However, despite his initial reaction to Crawford stepping up to face Canelo in what is a huge ask for the 37-year-old, ‘Iron’ Mike appears to have now made a u-turn on this as he claims ‘size means nothing’.
“There’s been men that have beat people, they’re beating people bigger than them, two divisions bigger than them, it’s not impossible. Henry Armstrong was a featherweight and he beat the middleweight champ! At 130lbs he beat the welterweight champ then he fought a draw with the middleweight champ, so I think size means nothing [but] determination means everything.”
‘Bud’ Crawford is expected to be in attendance for Canelo’s potential history making showdown with Scull in Riyadh on May 3, as boxing fans await an official announcement for one of, if not the biggest fight in a number of years.
