Mikey Garcia has weighed in on the controversial upcoming clash between Gervonta Davis and Jake Paul.
It was confirmed last week that reigning WBA lightweight champion ‘Tank’ Davis is set to collide with YouTuber-turned-boxer Paul on Friday November 14 at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia.
It will be Davis’ first ring appearance since he fought to a majority decision draw against fellow countryman Lamont Roach Jr back in March, although many viewers felt ‘The Reaper’ had done more than enough to dethrone the 30-year-old from Baltimore.
Paul made his return to the ring back in June, defeating Mexico’s former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr via unanimous decision at the conclusion of their cruiserweight bout at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.
With many boxing figures already offering their thoughts on the upcoming battle, Garcia is the latest to chime in with his views, having known first hand what it is like to move up in weight after a stellar career which saw him claim world honours from featherweight to super-lightweight.
Speaking to ESNEWS, Garcia didn’t hesitate to back ‘Tank’ Davis ahead of his clash with Paul, as he plays down the significant size and reach advantage of ‘The Problem Child’.
“I think Tank’s gonna win, even though people think ‘Oh the size advantage’, yeah but Jake Paul’s not a fighter. If he was a real high level contender then the biggest man would win but Jake is not an A-level fighter.”
There have been concerns raised about ‘Tank’ stepping into the ring with Paul, especially considering the 30-year-old stands at eight inches shorter than ‘The Problem Child’ and weighed in at over 60 pounds lighter than him ahead of his March showdown with Roach, but it appears that Garcia doesn’t believe this will be a factor.
