MTK Golden Contract double-header Draw Results

Ohara Davies and Ryan Walsh get the golden balls and the right to choose their semi-final opponents in the MTK Golden Contract tournaments

The sheer cojones on British featherweight champion Ryan Walsh. Never mind that he is scheduled to defend his Lonsdale Belt – owned outright and held since – against Reece Mould on March 28, just five weeks after his MTK Golden Contract semi-final this Friday at York Hall. Having received the coveted Golden Ball at today’s draw, ballsy Walsh picked unbeaten, awkward and oft-avoided Derry southpaw Tyrone McCullagh as his opponent.

The decision made by Cromer switch-hitter Walsh left the other 126lb semi-final as another mouthwatering fixture in Commonwealth king Leigh Wood vs Jazza Dickens, whose only pro defeats were to world-rated Kid Galahad, Tommy Ward and Guillermo Rigondeaux.

The other Golden Ball recipient, enigmatic super-lightweight Ohara Davies, took a more predictable route in choosing Jeff Ofori, the 140lb outsider who only came into the tournament as a late notice (one day) replacement for Lewis Benson, before edging Kieran Gething in their quarter-final. The other semi pits two genuine talents in Tyrone McKenna and Mohamed Mimoune. This puts the highly anticipated Davies vs McKenna showdown at risk of not happening, at least not in this tournament.

We cannot wait for Friday.
