Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury fought another close 12-rounds this past weekend.
It was the great Ukrainian who came out on top once more in a back-and-forth contest. He very much remained on the front foot and landed the cleaner shots more often. The scorecards reflected that with a unanimous decision in his favour and scores of 116-112 from all three judges.
Usyk has now achieved everything there is to achieve in the sport – from Olympic gold medalist to undisputed four-belt cruiserweight king in 2018, then to undisputed heavyweight ruler back in May.
This second victory over Fury puts that beyond all doubt, especially having also twice beaten Anthony Joshua and after already dispatching the current IBF champion Daniel Dubois last summer.
Speaking to The Stomping Ground, former world champion Naseem Hamed revealed his thoughts on the scoring.
“To be honest I was a little bit disappointed with the way they judged that. To me, it was a little bit too wide. I personally thought it was a lot closer than that. I wouldn’t have give it the way they give it Usyk.”
He then had plenty of praise for Fury, who he believes was deserving of the win.
“I thought he did really, really well, Tyson. He did way better than the first time. That really deserved to be 1-1 and we should have a trilogy on our hands. I’m a bit upset for Tyson and all of his friends and family. I just wish he’d have won that fight ’cause we needed that fight, he needed to cement his legacy.”
Even if he were to retire now, Fury would still go down in history as a great heavyweight after legendary wins on away soil over the likes of Wladimir Klitschko and Deontay Wilder.
