The most recently crowned heavyweight champion has declared his interest in fighting the winner of Anthony Joshua‘s fight with Tyson Fury.
The heavyweight belts have largely been sewn up by Oleksandr Usyk in the last few years. However, the all-time Ukrainian great and only ever man to become a two-time undisputed champion recently vacated three of the four major titles when he announced he would fight just once more before retiring.
The other belt is the WBO, and that is in possession of Daniel Dubois, who just beat Fabio Wardley and could well have to take a rematch before he moves on to a fresh challenge.
In the meantime, the long-awaited showdown between long-time British heavyweight stars and former champions Joshua and Fury is set to take place later this year, but only if both men come through their final tune-up fights: Joshua takes on Kristian Prenga on July 25, while Fury faces Mariusz Wach in Thailand the day before.
The biggest winner following Usyk’s vacating of the belts was Agit Kabayel, a long time German heavyweight contender who was promoted to full WBC champion once the news was revealed.
He is now hoping to make the first defence of his title in September or October, and, speaking to Sky Sports, has also offered the winner of Joshua-Fury a shot later down the line.
“Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua, when you think you have a chance to be a three-time world champion, let’s do it. Kabayel will wait for you.”We can make the fight but first of all I think all the fans, the British fans want to see the Anthony Joshua versus Tyson Fury fight and after that we can see who’s best for the fight with me.”
Fury is well acquainted with Kabayel as a former sparring partner, and is now ranked as the number one challenger to his title.
