How Devin Haney became the youngest world champion in boxing

As one door closes, another one opens. With Vasyl Lomachenko following Canelo in being named a WBC Franchise champion - which means little historically but comes with coveted tangible benefits - this time at lightweight, 20-year-old Devin Haney becomes, as a result, the youngest world champion in boxing.

Unbeaten Haney, already the Interim champ by virtue of his stopping Zaur Abdullaev in September, was upgraded along with Lomachenko at the WBC convention, currently taking place in Cancun. He next fights, like fellow world champion Billy Joe Saunders, on the undercard of KSI vs Logan Paul 2 on November 9.

Haney is an exciting talent and delighted fans on a recent trip to the UK. It should be noted that, previous to this move, he had been actively calling for a Lomachenko showdown.

The latter, also the WBO and Super WBA ruler, is aiming to meet whoever is the IBF champ following title-holder Richard Commey’s forthcoming defence, against Teofimo Lopez.
