John Riel Casimero has been ruled out of his fight later this week by the British Boxing Board of Control. The Filipino bantamweight was meant to defend his WBO world title in Liverpool on Friday, atop a Probellum-promoted event. Paul Butler, Ellesmere Port’s former IBF bantamweight titleholder, had been scheduled to be in the opposite corner at the M&S Bank Arena. But Casimero won’t be fit to fight after the Board were made aware of him having “made use of a sauna in close proximity” to his fight with "The Baby-Faced Assassin".
Seconds Out understands that Butler, who is trained by Joe Gallagher, will still box on the card which is set to feature Sam Maxwell in a vacant IBO super-lightweight title clash against Alejandro Meneses. We have been informed that Jonas Sultan - who holds a victory over Casimero - is in town and has passed a check-weigh to potentially replace his fellow Filipino.
Casimero using the sauna – having completed two check-weighs with the Board since arriving in the UK, showing an alarming reduction in weight of 10lbs in just three days – goes against their medical guidelines, meaning that the governing body has not permitted the man who took the title from former Butler foe Zolani Tete back in November 2019 to box.
The WBO has now issued a ’Show Cause’ notice to Casimero and his team for the next 48 hours as to why the championship should not be declared vacant. If it is taken from him, then Butler vs Sultan could proceed with the title at stake.
Former IBF featherweight title challenger Jazza Dickens, who was stopped by Kid Galahad at Fight Camp last year and has since linked u with coach Pete Taylor, takes on ex-European champion Andoni Gago and Rocky Fielding, the former WBA ‘regular’ super-middleweight champion, returns to the ring.
Local star Peter McGrail, a former Team GB Olympian who turned professional at the back end of last year after a disappointing campaign in the vest and headguard in Tokyo, fights for the fourth time alongside his brother Joe.
There are another trio of debutants in the shape of Harry Kinsella, the ex-Kirkdale ABC man, as well as Rotunda’s Frankie Stringer and Birtley boy Luke McCormack.
Blane Hyland will fight for the seventh time as a pro and will be joined on the card by super-featherweight Steven Cairns and bantamweight William Cawley.
