Last seen turning the tables and winning the WBC super flyweight title over rival Srisaket Sor Rungvisai four months ago, two-time champion Juan Francisco Estrada stopped game Dewayne Beamon in round nine at a sold out Centro de Usos Múltiples in Hermosillo, Mexico.

Estrada, making the first defense of his WBC belt, accepted Beamon’s aggressiveness in the opening stanza without complaint. The underdog challenger darted inside and fired, while Estrada countered. Beamon got Estrada’s attention by snapping his head back with lefts. Estrada landed an uppercut on the inside, but the first round belonged to the American.

Things changed quickly in round two. Thirty seconds into the heat, a Estrada (40-3, 27 KOs) left hook deposited Beamon on the seat of his pants. Beamon jumped up with a surprised look on his face as Estrada’s hometown fans roared their approval. Seconds later, he was down again, courtesy of a couple of bodyshots. The frustrated little man from North Carolina, who began his professional career at 31, jumped up unhurt but the knockdowns counted. Estrada went downstairs some more, but Beamon fought back—landing a solid left hook.

Beamon (16-2-1, 11 KOs) rallied a little in round three until Estrada clocked him with an uppercut. Beamon’s legs went south, but he stayed upright and fired back. In rounds four and five, Beamon stayed competitive but Estrada’s combinations continued to land. Beamon fired looping right hands in round six. Estrada stayed in the pocket and checked Beamon. His blows were short and accurate. Beamon talked to Estrada as the champion backed into the ropes. He landed a combination, but ate a left. He smiled at Estrada and walked him back to his corner.

Both fighters connected with wicked shots in round seven. The difference was that Estrada could hurt Beamon. A right on the ear caused the gutsy Beamon to stumble into the ropes. Estrada tried to finish him but the bell rang as Beamon staggered to his corner. Estrada kept attacking in round eight. Beamon’s left eye was bloody. Estrada rocked him with a hook and wicked shot to the gut. Beamon was gassed, and the end was coming.

In the fateful ninth round, Estrada was intent on ending things. He went to the body and head with multiple punches. Beamon was hanging on by a thread, which broke after Estrada unloaded a number of shots - forcing the referee to stop the contest.
