Lawrence Okolie could not find a suitable challenger for his British and Commonwealth titles so marked time against short-notice opponent, Mariano Angel Gudino of Argentina, over a scheduled 10. The South American was durable but never really got to grips with the rangy, awkward puncher, opting to move and defend. He was dropped three times in round seven before it was stopped at the end of that session. Okolie should next challenge fellow unbeaten Yves Ngabu for the Belgian’s European title. Ngabu is trained by Dominic Ingle in Sheffield.

Lewisham light-heavy Dan Azeez proved too sharp and poised for Canning Town rival Charlie Duffield, stopping him in six for the vacant Southern Area title. Azeez caused Duffield’s eye to close early on and targeted it frequently after that. He took charge virtually from the off with greater variety and the contest had become one-sided by the time brave Duffield’s trainer Mark Tibbs threw the towel in. Azeez looks destined for bigger things.

There were also early wins for Team Body Snatcher heavyweights Fabio Wardley and Alen Babic, while Sheffield’s former top amateur Dalton Smith moved to 2-0 with a comprehensive two-round retirement win over durable journeyman Ibrar Riyaz of Reading. This was only the fourth time in 166 defeats that Riyaz had failed to last the distance, so quite a feather in the busy, accurate Smith’s cap.
