Terri Harper prepared to unify if Natasha Jonas not ready for July

WBC champion Terri Harper is desperate to get back out in July, whether that is against Natasha Jonas or another opponent

WBC female super-featherweight champion Terri Harper is willing to unify against her WBO counterpart if the postponed bout with fellow Brit Natasha Jonas fails to go ahead. Harper’s first defence was scheduled for April 21 in hometown Doncaster but Covid-19 wrecked those plans and while she still hopes to meet the Liverpool lady, probably behind closed doors at Matchroom HQ, she has suggested some other options should Jonas not be prepared for July.

"If Tasha turns around and says she’s not ready, I’d be happy to fight [WBC Interim queen, Katharina] Thanderz," Harper said in the below video. "Even looking at a fight, which might sound crazy, a unification with Ewa Brodnicka. I’ve been training hard and staying ready and I just want to make sure I have a good fight in July."

Mandatory contender Thanderz is one of several potential challengers circling the 23-year-old champ. Unbeaten American Mikaela Mayer has recently called Harper out, while Lou DiBella touted his own US contender in gutsy and experienced Heather Hardy. Harper takes this new-found ’popularity’ in her stride.

"At first I used to take it quite personally," she laughed. "Like, what is it they see in me to think they can win? But I sat back and thought, ’I’ve got something they all want, that they’re all chasing. It’s the WBC belt, obviously. That’s what gives me my extra motivation to get up in the morning during lockdown and go out running or go training in my garage on my own. That’s my extra motivation to stay on top of my game."
